Many big sides will face each other in the last 16 of UCL.
Paths to the final have been mapped out for those still vying for continental glory in the 2024–25 season. As the knockout phase play-offs concluded, teams like Manchester City and AC Milan have fallen at the hurdle before the last 16. Still, there are several heavyweight outfits remaining in the pack.
Liverpool, who are now leading the Premier League standings, dominated the UCL league phase, but they will have a difficult test now.
After defeating Manchester City with a hat-trick from Kylian Mbappe in the second leg play-off bout, defending champions Real Madrid will face cross-city rivals Atletico, while Barcelona are preparing for a matchup with Portuguese rivals Benfica.
In the Champions League round of 16, Liverpool will play Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal will play PSV Eindhoven, and Aston Villa will play Club Brugge.
This will be Liverpool’s first meeting with PSG since 2018–19 when the Reds won the European Championship for the sixth time.
If Arsenal defeat PSV, they will play the record 15-time champions Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid, in the round of eight. The winner of that match would play Aston Villa, Club Brugge, PSG or Liverpool in the semifinals.
Lille will face German club Borussia Dortmund in the last 16. The Feyenoord team that crushed AC Milan’s hopes in the playoffs will face another Italian giant Inter Milan, who are the only Serie A representatives in the round of 16.
On March 4 and 5, the first legs of the elite European competition’s round of 16 matches will be played. A week later, the second leg matches will be played. The Allianz Arena in Munich is scheduled to host the 2025 Champions League final on May 31.
