Copa America 2024: Did Lionel Messi pick an injury in 1-0 win over Chile?
The former Barcelona star had an injury scare during the game.
Argentina’s second Copa America match saw them defeat Chile 1-0, but they had concerns about the health of their captain, Lionel Messi.
At the MetLife Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where replacement Lautaro Martinez’s 88th-minute goal sent Lionel Scaloni’s team into the tournament’s knockout rounds, the Inter Miami winger was attended to for an injury sustained throughout the first half.
Despite his injury concerns, Messi struck the post in the first forty-five minutes of play, but Argentina were mainly thwarted by a small Chilean team that must defeat Canada in their final Group A match to advance to the round of eight.
Speaking after the Copa America match, Messi said that he hoped his injury was “nothing serious”.
“It’s bothering me a bit, but I was able to finish the match,” Messi said. “I hope it’s nothing serious. It was hard for me to move freely. Tomorrow we’ll see how I feel.
“We knew it would be very physical. All the games are physical, and Chile are tough. They had a lot on the line… but we achieved our objective, winning, and we’re into the quarter-finals.”
Julian Alvarez was Messi‘s attacking partner when the encounter began on matchday two, but the Manchester City player was ineffective before Martinez scored the game’s lone goal.
The competition to beat Argentina, the reigning champions, will be fierce on matchday three of Group A as Canada defeated Peru 1-0 with a goal by Jonathan David. Argentina are the first side to advance to the knockout stages.
