Copa America 2024 knockout rules explained: No extra time, penalties to decide quarterfinals
Argentina are the defending champions.
With the group stage of Copa America 2024 concluded, the decisive knockout rounds are set to commence with an exciting lineup of high-octane matches.
The coveted competition in the United States this summer has already proven entertaining with action-packed games, inspiring underdog tales, and incredible moments, keeping worldwide football fans on the edge of their seats.
From Group A, defending champions Argentina and newcomers Canada have qualified for the knockout rounds, with Chile and Peru exiting the competition. Tournament favorites Argentina finished as table toppers with a perfect record and will face Ecuador at the NRG Stadium in the first quarterfinal. Canada, defying odds, finished second and will face Venezuela at the AT&T Stadium.
From Group B, dark horse Venezuela and Ecuador have qualified, with Mexico and Jamaica exiting. Venezuela has had a dream run, finishing the group stages as table toppers with a perfect record. Ecuador finished second with four points.
In Group C, Uruguay and underdogs Panama have qualified, while hosts USA and Bolivia exit. Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay finished as table-toppers with a perfect record and will face Brazil at the Allegiant Stadium. Panama, against odds, finished second with two wins and will face Colombia at the State Farm Stadium.
In Group D, dark horse Colombia and favorites Brazil have qualified, with Costa Rica and Paraguay exiting. Riding a 26-game unbeaten streak, Nestor Lorenzo’s Colombia finished as table-toppers with two wins and a draw. Brazil surprisingly finished second with five points.
Argentina’s Lautaro Martinez leads the scoring chart with four goals, while Colombia’s James Rodriguez tops the assists chart with three.
Unlike other major international competitions, Copa America 2024 will not include extra time during the quarterfinals, semifinals, or third-place decider match. If these games are tied after 90 minutes plus injury time, they will proceed directly to a penalty shootout.
This format doesn’t apply to the final, where an additional 30-minute extra time will be allotted if the game is undecided after regular time.
The 2024 Copa America final is scheduled for July 15 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
