The defending champions lead Group A with six points.

After Argentina defeated Chile 1-0 in Group A on Tuesday thanks to a late goal from Lautaro Martinez, they became the first team to guarantee their spot in the Copa America quarterfinals.

The winner was not revealed to the reigning champions until the 88-minute. Following a corner kick by Lionel Messi, Claudio Bravo of Chile blocked Giovani Lo Celso’s attempt, but Martinez was there to net the rebound. After a protracted VAR assessment for offside, the goal stayed.

After two games, Argentina leads the group with six points, followed by Canada in second place with three after their 1-0 victory over Peru on the previous Tuesday. Peru and Chile both have one point.

In the 36th minute, Captain Messi, who was involved in both of Argentina’s goals in their opening victory over Canada, came dangerously close to opening the score with a strong low shot that struck the post.Argentina increased their pressure in the second half, and Alexis Mac Allister missed a golden opportunity when Messi sent in a pin-point free kick.

Who could Argentina face in quarterfinal?

Argentina‘s victory more than likely guarantees them first place in Group A, and they will play the team that places second in Group B. On Thursday, June 27, when all four teams—Venezuela, Mexico, Ecuador, and Jamaica—will be playing, La Albiceleste will get closer to finding out who their opponent is.

Argentina have proven once more that they are a strong contender to win Copa America, and because they are leading their group, they only need one more point to secure first place.

After that, they will have to face the runners-up of Group B in the quarterfinal.

In their second Copa America match, Canada overcame a 2-0 deficit to the reigning champions Argentina, by beating Peru 1-0, while Peru opened with a 0-0 draw against Chile.

On Saturday (local time), the Canadians play Chile in Orlando, Florida to round off Group A. On the following day, Argentina and Peru will play in Miami Gardens, Florida.
