Could Cristiano Ronaldo score his 1000th career goal in World Cup 2026 final?

CR7 has now officially secured 971 goals across club and international football.

Considered as one of the greatest players ever to play the sport, Cristiano Ronaldo is getting closer to completing 1000 career goals. Football often creates moments that almost feel unreal. CR7 completing that milestone on the biggest stage of them all can be one such unexpected moment.

When it comes to consistency, Cristiano Ronaldo has been one of the most consistent players in football history. Only Lionel Messi comes close to matching (or even surpassing) the Portuguese talisman in terms of putting up reliable performances. These two stars have rewritten record books in Europe and even beyond.

CR7 currently plays for Al Nassr and recently scored his 971st career goal against Al Shabab during the Saudi Pro League matchup. The 41-year-old is now going to compete in the FIFA World Cup for the sixth time. He is on the verge of becoming the only player to score a goal in six different editions of the mega competition.

Cristiano Ronaldo missed a couple of friendly matches for the Portugal national football team during the recent international window due to physical discomfort. However, Roberto Martinez (current Portugal’s head coach) confirmed that the 41-year-old is going to be a part of the upcoming edition of the World Cup.

Can CR7 score his 1000th goal in the FIFA World Cup 2026?

With just 29 goals remaining, it has become clear that Cristiano Ronaldo can score his 1000th goal in 2026. It will be something beautiful to witness the Portuguese talisman completing the milestone in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, but it can only be possible if the Portugal national football team battles through all stages to reach the final.

On paper, CR7 could still score the 1000th goal in the final of FIFA’s flagship competition. But it is not going to be an easy task. Ronaldo will need to be more than consistent with his performances to score goals, just like his Real Madrid days.

He has two games left in club football for the season – ACL Two final vs Gamba Osaka and a Saudi Pro League match vs Damac. If his national team reaches the final of the World Cup 2026, that’s more eight games for him. In between, they will also play two friendlies.

In total, CR7 can have 12 games to score 29 goals (with the last one coming in the WC final). Will it happen? The odds are low, given that he no longer scores at the high rate he used to.

During the recent post-match interview after a 2-0 win over Al Ahli, on 29 April, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner mentioned, “The end of my career is getting close, let’s enjoy every game.”

However, Cristiano Ronaldo will not be hanging up his boots until he nets his 1000th career goal.

“I keep scoring goals, but above all, it’s about winning,” CR7 said further.

A Selecao’s head coach, Roberto Martinez, also praised the dedication shown by Cristiano Ronaldo. He is most likely to start the veteran striker during the FIFA World Cup 2026.
