The Spanish goalkeeper is in talks to join the Italian side.

The transfer of David de Gea to Genoa has been shelved for the time being, as reported by Sky Sports News.

The 33-year-old, who was connected to numerous clubs in Europe, Saudi Arabia and the United States, is still a free agent after leaving Manchester United 12 months ago.

He was in negotiations to join Genoa, a Serie A team. But his “unrealistic” wage expectations caused the agreement to fall through. Genoa, who placed 11th in the Italian league the previous season, are now concentrating on other targets.

De Gea has been without a club for an entire year. After leaving United at the end of the 2022-23 season, the Spanish goalkeeper has been training alone.

The 33-year-old finally revealed that he could be joining a club this summer after he posted on social media. But, now his transfer to the Italian club could be halted due to his high salary demand.

However, the deal has not completely collapsed. There could be compromises made if the Spanish goalkeeper wants to continue playing in Europe. He also has interest from Saudi clubs who will certainly be ready to hand the former United goalkeeper a mouth-watering salary.

After moving to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011, De Gea spent 12 years as a Red Devil, making 545 appearances.

In addition to breaking Peter Schmeichel’s milestone for the most clean sheets at the team, the former Atletico Madrid player also set a record for the most appearances made for the Old Trafford team.

De Gea has 45 caps for Spain. But he hasn’t played for the recently crowned European Champions since 2020. De Gea claimed five major trophies with Manchester United, including the Premier League, League Cup, FA Cup and Europa League.

It will be intriguing to watch where De Gea ends up. At 33, he still has a lot to offer prospective suitors. He can be a wise addition to any squad, even though it might take him some time to get back up to speed.
