A detailed look at all own goals scored during Euro 2024
In the last Euro, a total of 11 own goals were scored.
Euro 2024 final is now upon us with Spain and England taking on each other to fight for the continental glory on Sunday evening. La Roja have been the side to score the most goals in the competition (13), while England have produced only seven goals so far in the championship.
Meanwhile, no players have scored more than three goals in the competition with many players tied with three goals. Harry Kane and Dani Olmo will have a ‘golden chance’ to win the Golden Boot if either of them scores in the final.
This time there has been a drought of goals scored in the competition while many unwanted records were set. Own goals have shined better than any forward or outfield player. Many players have unintentionally put the ball in their own net.
The Euro 2021 record of 11 own goals could be broken in the Euro 2024 final if we witness more own goals as 10 own goals have already been scored. A fun fact to make things even more surprising is that no own goals were scored between 1976 and 1996 Euros.
For England, Glen Johnson has been the only player to score an own goal in the 2012 Euros against Sweden. Also, the only own goal that has benefited the Three Lions was in 2021 when Denmark‘s Simon Kjaer scored in the semi-final of the competition.
