Messi recently scored hat-tricks for club and national team.

Lionel Messi’s goalscoring exploits have been second to none as the forward has scored abundant goals throughout his career. He has been consistently on the scoresheet be it for club or country, and still at the age of 37-year-old he continues to surprise everyone with his goals.

Messi’s recent hat-trick against the New England Revolution in an MLS match saw him record 49 career club hat-tricks. Prior to that match the former Barcelona forward also netted a treble for Argentina against Bolivia in their 2026 World Cup qualifying match.

This saw him reach his tenth hat-trick in the national team jersey as the South American giants reinforced their spot at the top of the qualifying table.

Despite scoring so many hat tricks for both the national team and the club, does Messi have the most hat tricks in football history? Let’s take a look below.

Does Lionel Messi hold the record for most hat-tricks in football history?

Scoring hat tricks has not always been an easy task, but only two players made it look easy. Messi and Ronaldo used to go head-to-head in LaLiga for their respective clubs during their time there and have scored hat-tricks for fun.

Lionel Messi is the second player with the most hat-tricks in football currently, as his foe Cristiano Ronaldo is leading the table with 66 career trebles, seven hat-tricks ahead of Messi.

However, both are tied on most international hat-tricks, 10. Ronaldo is ahead of the former Paris Saint-Germain player with the most club hat-tricks, 56, while the 37-year-old Argentine has 49 club hat-tricks.

Lionel Messi is just seven hat-tricks away from equalling Ronaldo’s record. It could be possible to close the gap or even take the lead if he continues to play.

Messi is also two years younger than Ronaldo which also gives him a higher chance of ending his career establishing more records and scoring more goals before calling his time from the sport.
