Euro 2024: England's potential route to the final
The Euro 2020 runners-up could only manage one win in the group stage
Euro 2020 runners-up and one of the favourites to win Euro 2024, England wrapped up their group stage fixtures with a 0-0 draw against Slovenia. The Three Lions have finished at the top of their group, but not in the way they would’ve liked. They started off with a 0-1 win over Serbia before sharing spoils against Denmark and Slovenia.
England have not played an entertaining brand of football at the tournament so far, but need to level themselves up from here on. It has not been the kind of start they would’ve liked and Gareth Southgate needs to do something extraordinary if England are to keep their chances alive at the tournament.
The Three Lions have failed to bring out their best brand of football and make the most out of their star-studded squad. But, despite everything, the silver lining for England would be the fact that their first-place finish in Group C has helped them avoid a potential meeting with host Germany in the last 16. Moreover, they have an easy bracket to play against and a more comfortable route to the final.
Let us take a look at what could be England’s road to the final.
RO16: Gelsenkirchen, 30 June
With the group stages done and dusted, The Three Lions’ focus will now shift to their RO16 clash against Slovakia who’ve qualified as one of the best third-placed teams. England will want to reset and go all out against Slovakia to silence their critics. Unless Slovakia do something out of the box, England are the clear favourites to secure a place in the Quarter-finals.
Quarter-final: Berlin, July 6
If England make it to the quarter-final, they will face off against the winner between Switzerland and Italy. The quarter-final clash will be England’s biggest hurdle on their road to the final because they are most likely to meet defending champions and the worst nightmare Italy here.
The Gli Azzurri have a proven track record against England in high-stakes games having pulled off a comeback in the final of Euro 2020. Switzerland have been a good side so far in the tournament, but are the second favourites against Italy.
Semi-final: Dortmund, July 10
Should England settle scores with Italy and make their way into the semi-final, they will be very high on confidence. Their most probable opponent in the semi-final will be the Netherlands who have also given a really good account of themselves so far in the tournament. Austria is also a possibility, but their chances against the Netherlands are very slim.
Final: Berlin, July 14
If England do the unthinkable and reach the final once again, they will meet one of Germany, Spain, Portugal and France. While Germany and Spain might face each other in the quarter-finals, Portugal and France could also shake hands in the last eight. If England make it to the ultimate game, they are not going to have it easy and will have to play against one of the title favourites.
