Euro 2024: France's potential route to the final
Les Blues finished second in their group behind Austria
The 2024 European Championship has wrapped an entertaining group stage leg and the spotlight now shifts to the all important knockouts. 16 teams have qualified for the RO16 from six groups. One of the major surprises of the tournament has been France’s unnatural run of form.
France began their campaign with a 0-1 victory over eventual group winners Austria. They then played out a 0-0 draw against the Netherlands at the Red Bull Arena before wrapping up their group stage fixtures with a 1-1 draw against Poland.
The 2018 World Champions finished second in their group behind Austria and have made their road to the final a little more complicated. This is also the first time that France has failed to finish at the top of their group at a major tournament Euro 2012. The Les Blues only have themselves to blame for not putting their best foot forward.
In this article, we take a look at what could be France’s road to the final.
RO16: Dusseldorf, July 1
Les Blues will go up against Belgium in their RO16 clash. Belgium finished second in Group E and have therefore been granted a chance to play against France. Didier Deschamps’ are the favorites in this game and will want to capitalize on their chances. France will take motivation from the fact that they have beaten Belgium in their last two meetings.
Quarter-final: Hamburg, July 5
Should Les Blues manage to get past Belgium on July 1, they will travel to Hamburg to play their quarter-final clash. The Les Blues’ potential opponent will be the winner between Portugal and Slovenia with Portugal most likely to come through. And if that happens, France will be poised to settle scores with Portugal for the 2016 Euro final and go through to the semis.
Semi-final: Munich, July 9
If France manage to reach the final four of the tournament, they can face anyone among Germany, Denmark, Spain and Georgia on July 9 at the Allianz Arena in Munich. While Germany and Spain are more likely to come through, Denmark and Georgia can also pull off an upset.
Final: Berlin, July 14
And if France manage to travel through this road unharmed to the final, they will be the favourites to lift the trophy because the other half of the draw isn’t so complicated. France will most likely face off against one of England, Italy, Austria or the Netherlands in the final.
