Euro 2024: Netherland's potential route to the final
Netherland face Romania in the Round of 16.
Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands had a strong start to their Euro 2024 campaign, but a collapse on the final matchday against dark horse Austria dropped them to third in Group D.
Despite this setback, the Dutch qualified for the knockout rounds as one of the best third-placed teams. They began their campaign with a 2-1 comeback win against a resilient Poland, followed by an impressive goalless draw against tournament favorites France.
Heading into their final group game, the Netherlands were well-positioned for a top-two finish. However, a stunning 3-2 loss to Austria saw them finish third in Group D. Winger Cody Gakpo is currently joint second on the tournament’s top scorer chart with two goals.
Koeman’s side displayed mixed form in the group stages and will look to address minor issues as they head into the decisive knockout rounds of Euro 2024.
Last 16: Allianz Arena (Munich), Tuesday, July 2
The Netherlands will play Romania in the round of 16
Despite a third-place finish qualification, the Dutch managed to get a considerably favourable draw as they are set to face Group E table toppers Romania in the round of 16. Romania have enjoyed a dream run in the tournament so far, with an exceptional group stage performance that saw them top their group over the likes of top teams such as Belgium and Ukraine.
Heading into this match, the Netherlands are heavy favourites to win it and progress to the next round of the competition, but a potential upset could well and truly be on the cards, with Romania on sky high on confidence as a cohesive unit after an amazing group stage display.
Quarter-final: Olympiastadion Berlin (Berlin), Sunday, July 7
If the Netherlands get past their round of 16 opponents, then they will be facing the winners of the match, Austria vs. Turkey, in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024.
Austria was a part of Group D alongside the Netherlands, where they defied all odds and topped the group of death with their stellar performances. On the other hand, Turkey too had a strong group stage phase in which they managed to finish second in the Group F standings level on points with table-toppers Portugal.
Semi-final: Signal Iduna Park (Dortmund), Thursday, July 11
Should the Dutch make it to the final four of Euro 2024, their most likely opponents at this stage could either be tournament favourites England or defending champions Italy.
Both the Three Lions and the Gli Azzurri have experienced disappointing campaigns by their usual high standards, but they are still one of the frontrunners to win Euro 2024.
An outside possibility of making it to this stage of the tournament is Switzerland, who have enjoyed an unbeaten start to their Euros campaign and could potentially be the surprise package of the summer.
Final: Olympiastadion Berlin (Berlin), Monday, July 15
If Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands manages to make it to the final of Euro 2024, then they would be most likely facing the top teams on the other side of the draw: Spain, Germany, Portugal, or France.
