UEFA introduced new yellow card rules during Euro 2024.

At this summer’s Euros in Germany, UEFA have tightened its rules regarding yellow and red cards. According to the new regulations, a player who approaches the referee will receive a yellow card.

Only the captains of each team will be permitted to speak with the officials about the in-game decision going forward.

An outfield player may be nominated by a team that have designated their custodian as the captain. This player may then speak with the match authorities on their behalf.

Before the quarterfinal stage ends, players who receive two yellow cards will be suspended for one match. In addition, if they gather four yellow cards prior to the quarterfinal round, they will forfeit another game.

This implies that should their team advance to the next phase of the competition, a player who receives two yellow cards during the group stage, round of 16, and quarterfinals will be sidelined for the semifinals.

Fortunately, this yellow card rule will be eliminated following the quarterfinals, therefore accumulation of yellow cards won’t compel any player to miss the championship game.

The player will only be eliminated from the championship game if they receive a red card in the semifinals. At any point during Euro 2024, a player who obtains a red card will immediately be suspended for one match.

However, if the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body determines that the offence warrants greater action than a one-game penalty, they have the power to extend a player’s sentence.

A player’s suspension will extend to their team’s subsequent competitive game if the referee issues a red card to them during the championship. At the European Championships this summer, yellow and red cards are non-appealable.

Teams may, however, file an appeal with UEFA‘s Control, Ethics and Regulatory Body if the governing body decides to impose a longer ban.
