Euro 2024: Who will Switzerland face in Round of 16?

Switzerland have impressed so far in the tournament

Niclas Fuellkrug’s stoppage-time goal allowed the host nation Germany to rally from a goal down and force a 1-1 draw with Switzerland. With the result, Germany advance to the Euro 2024 knockout phase as the eventual winners of Group A, with the Swiss taking second place.

A foul in the build-up saw Germany’s Robert Andrich’s goal from the 17th minute disallowed. Dan Ndoye then netted for the Swiss with a clever volleyed finish 11 minutes later, but two minutes soon he struck the inside of the net.

The Swiss, who placed second in the group, already know who they will play against in the round of 16.

Who Switzerland will face in Round of 16?

The European Championship has seen the conclusion of two of the six groups, and we have announced the first Round of 16 pairing—Italy versus Switzerland—yesterday. Thanks to a goal in the 98th minute, Italy joined Spain, Albania, and Croatia in second place in Group B, while Switzerland finished second in Group A.

Switzerland, who are in its sixth consecutive major tournament’s final stages, will play Italy in Berlin on Saturday. The Swiss, who took the lead through Ndoye in the 28th minute and then gave it up through Fullkrug in the 92nd, which allowed the Germans to win the match and take first place in the group.

Switzerland thus comes in second and advances to the round of 16 where it will play either Italy. The second-placed team in Group B Hungary maintained their aspirations in the same group by defeating Scotland and earning three crucial points that might lead to qualification.

In the meantime, Italy laboured to make it to the round of 16 in Euro 2024 following a 1-1 tie with Croatia in the last group stage match.

In the 55th minute, Luka Modric gave Croatia the lead. However, it looked like the defending champions would soon be sent home packing but they managed to find an equalzier in 98th minue through Mattia Zaccagni.

The Round of 16 clash is slated to begin precisely in the evening on Saturday, June 29, 2024.
