The Spanish club have named five captains ahead of this campaign.

Three seasons prior, Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto were FC Barcelona’s four leaders. None of the four players are currently with the club. So the club have announced new club captains ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Robert Lewandowski, a veteran player, is conspicuously absent from this list. The Polish exclusion from the leadership group could be related to his prolonged uncertain future at the club.

Raphinha’s selection as the fourth captain is a significant show of support from the team. Despite his consistency, the Brazilian winger doesn’t always get it his way at Barcelona, and this increased importance may change the way supporters perceive him.

Barcelona supporters were eager to see who players were going to make up the captaincy contingent moving forward ahead of this season under Hansi Flick. The club’s leadership team has been established.

It should come as expected that Marc-Andre Ter Stegen is the first captain, given that he accepted the armband in the LaLiga season opener against Valencia. Former members of the leadership group Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong have advanced to become the second and third captains, respectively.

The surprise is that in contrast to the four players Barcelona typically names in the captaincy group, the team appears to be selecting a fifth player this time. With Pedri as the fifth captain, Raphinha will most likely be chosen as Barcelona’s fourth captain.

One may argue that Gavi ought to be a member of this leadership team, but he is still only 20 years old and will undoubtedly receive his opportunity in the future. The young Spanish footballer appears to be a player who would eventually lead Barcelona in captaincy.

The rationale for selecting five captains may stem from the fact that Frenkie and Araujo are both out of serious ailments. However, Barcelona doesn’t play without Ter Stegen too often, so Raphinha might not be needed.
