Using the chips correctly can make a huge difference.
Another season of the highly popular fantasy league game Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is upon us. As it is popularly known, FPL is relative to the real-world performance of the players from the Premier League and the users, also known as FPL managers, strategise long and hard to select their ideal team which collects points depending on how the individuals perform.
Seasoned FPL managers and newcomers alike must utilise the various chips in Fantasy Premier League which can give them a competitive edge over other managers. The FPL managers select a team and earn points based on the real-world performance of the players when they achieve goals scored, assists, clean sheets, and other statistical milestones. Every FPL manager works with a limited budget to make the competition fair but the chips can be difference-makers.
These chips contain special features which can help managers and boost their points total or allow them extra transfers, depending on the nature of the chip. For those who are new to the game or ones who need a revision, we have you covered. Here is a brief rundown on FPL chips ahead of the 2024-25 season:
Bench Boost
Bench Boost chip allows the points tally of the four substitutes to be added to the total points tally for one gameweek when it is put into effect. This chip is useful when there is a double gameweek and all the members of the squad have favourable fixtures.
Free Hit
The Free Hit chip allows an FPL manager to make unlimited transfers for one gameweek when it is active. However, these transfers are not permanent as the squad reverts back to the previous version before the free hit chip came into effect. The ideal time to use the Free Hit is when several players do not have matches in a game week or if they play each other.
Wildcard
The Wildcard chip allows an FPL manager to make unlimited transfers for one gameweek. However, unlike the Free Hit chip, any transfers made with the Wildcard enforced, are permanent. The best time to use a Wildcard chip is when a manager needs to make multiple transfers and avoid a points deduction. Furthermore, managers can play Wildcard twice in a season, in the first and the second half.
Triple Captain
A player who is set as captain has his points doubled. However, if the Triple Captain chip is active, then the captain’s points total is tripled. The ideal time to play this chip is either when a player has a really favourable fixture or during a double gameweek where both fixtures are favourable.
Mystery Chip
A mystery chip will be introduced in the 2024-25 edition of the FPL. This fifth chip is to be revealed in January 2025. Expectedly, the FPL managers are already making their guesses as to what special power it will bring and how it could affect the strategy going into the business end of the season.
