Gary Neville reveals how he came up with 'The Overlap' concept [Exclusive]
The Manchester United legend still remains very relevant in the footballing world
Former Manchester United captain and popular football pundit Gary Neville, who recently visited Chandigarh as part of the ‘United We Play’ initiative by Apollo Tyres, sat down for an exclusive interview with Khel Now.
During the conversation, Neville shared insights into the creation of his successful YouTube show, “The Overlap’. The platform, known for its in-depth football discussions with players, managers, and fans, was born from Neville’s desire to offer a space for meaningful, extended conversations about the sport, in contrast to the fast-paced, short-form content dominating social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Along with Neville, the podcast series is hosted by Roy Keane, Jill Scott, Jamie Carragher and Ian Wright
“It was just me wanting to basically have conversations with people about football, and everything was moving towards short-form content,” Neville explained. “Everything’s got to be ready for TikTok in 10 seconds, eight seconds, 30 seconds, 15 seconds. And I know there’s a place for that, but I felt like there was a place for people who are passionate about football just having conversations with each other on the sport.”
Determined to offer something different, Neville took the initiative and started his own channel. “I just decided I was gonna do it. It’s really easy. What I’m saying to you—anybody can set up a YouTube page, and then just go and find someone to speak to and you set it up. And that’s what I did.”
The motivation behind ‘The Overlap’ stemmed from Neville’s desire to engage deeply with football fans and personalities, allowing for relaxed, thoughtful conversations. “I was passionate about going and speaking to people about football and having a conversation with them, making them feel relaxed,” he added.
For Neville, it wasn’t just about creating a show, but also about doing something new in the broadcasting space. “It was more for me to go and do something different in a broadcast sense because I wasn’t getting that anywhere else. And obviously, it’s evolved and grown, and in the end, now, it’s probably one of the things I love the most doing.”
‘The Overlap’ has since become a widely popular platform, known for its candid interviews and deep-dive discussions, reflecting Neville’s original vision of meaningful football conversations.
