Both nations are neck-and-neck in the overall H2H

When Germany and Hungary take the field in Stuttgart on Wednesday, a long-standing rivalry will be renewed between two nations with a contentious history on the biggest stages.

The Germans are riding high after demolishing Scotland 5-1 in their Euro 2024 opener. Rising stars Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala scored early before Kai Havertz converted a penalty to give the hosts a commanding lead they would not relinquish.

Manager Julian Nagelsmann’s side is now unbeaten in five consecutive matches, with four wins during that stretch. They currently top Group A ahead of Switzerland on goal differential. A victory over Hungary would confirm Hosts’s place in the knockout rounds.

However, Hungary have proven to be a thorn in Nationalelf side recently. In their Euro 2020 group stage meeting, the Hungarians grabbed a hard-fought 2-2 draw in Munich. Then in the 2022-23 Nations League campaign, Hungary took four points off Nationalelf, including a shocking 1-0 win last September courtesy of Adam Szalai’s late goal.

Marco Rossi’s men were brought back down to earth with a 3-1 loss to Switzerland in their Euro 2024 lid-lifter after Barnabas Varga’s header made it 2-1. But the defeat did little to dampen Hungary’s spirits, as they had won 12 of their previous 16 matches while scoring in 12 consecutive games before facing the Swiss.

The Hungarians will look to captain Dominik Szoboszlai to help control the tempo and create chances, while an experienced back line will need to keep the potent German attack led by Havertz, Musiala and Wirtz in check.

Germany and Hungary have met three previous times at major tournaments, with 20 total goals scored in those meetings for an incredible average of 6.7 goals per game.

Recent history suggests Hungary are no pushovers and a positive result in Stuttgart is well within reach for Rossi’s side as they aim to replicate the heroics that saw them take four points off Nationalelf in the last Nations League cycle.

For the Germans, securing qualification for the knockout rounds is the clear objective. But doing so against a Hungarian team that has had been resilient off late require patience and a top performance from the tournament hosts.
