Ronaldo has been linked with a move to a few Brazilian clubs.
According to Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, “there are discussions” about Cristiano Ronaldo participating in this summer’s Club World Cup.
The Saudi Pro League’s Al-Nassr were not able to make it into the United States’ 32-team tournament this summer.
The 40-year-old Portugal forward, however, may still play in the new-look event whose contract expires this June, according to Infantino.
Infantino discussed Cristiano Ronaldo’s fiercest opponent, Lionel Messi, playing for the Inter Miami team in the tournament’s inaugural match on June 14 in an interview with YouTuber and streamer IShowSpeed.
He then added: “And Ronaldo might play for one of the teams as well at the Club World Cup.”
“There are discussions with some clubs, so if any club is watching and is interested in hiring Ronaldo for the Club World Cup… who knows, who knows.”
After departing Manchester United in the middle of the 2022-23 season, Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s deal with Al-Nassr expires on June 30.
This year’s Club World Cup is going to be the first with more than eight teams and the first to take place in the summer.
In order to enable clubs to finalise transfer moves in time for the tournament, FIFA, the body that oversees world football, has instituted an extra transfer window period from June 1–10.
Last weekend, the Spanish tabloid Marca, externally, revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo had received an offer from an unidentified Brazilian team.
Last Sunday, Renato Paiva, the coach of Botafogo, one of the four Brazilian clubs that qualified, was questioned about Ronaldo.
He laughed before saying, “Christmas is only in December. But if he came, you can’t say no to a star like that.”
“I don’t know anything – I’m just answering the question. But, as I said, coaches always want the best. Ronaldo, even at his age, is still a goal-scoring machine. In a team that creates chance after chance, he would be good.”
