Bayern will meet the defending league champions on Saturday.

The 91st Bundesliga match between Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich is rapidly approaching. It’s hard to exaggerate the significance of this meeting, even this early in the season. Three points clear of the reigning league winners are the Bavarians at the top of the standings.

Bayern will double that difference if they triumph at home. Leverkusen have been one of Bayern’s main domestic rivals for the past few decades, even though they only won the Bundesliga for the first time in May.

Here are five great Bayern Munich vs. Bayer Leverkusen Bundesliga games.

5. Bayern Munich 4-1 Bayer Leverkusen (1999-20)

We’ll start by looking back at one of the most iconic Bayern vs. Leverkusen games, which occurred on February 9, 2000. The Bavarians defeated their opponents 4-1, moving up to the top of the standings that day.

Later in the season, Leverkusen could have won the league over Bayern and finished top of the league. However, they crumbled on the last day of matchday, allowing the Bavarians to win the title fight on goal differential.

4. Bayer Leverkusen 5-2 Bayern Munich (1996-97)

The most convincing Leverkusen win dates back to 1997, when the team that included Niko and Robert Kovac, Paulo Sergio, and Jens Nowotny sprinted to a 3-0 halftime lead, with the Brazilian, who would later play for Bayern, opening the scoring in just five minutes.

At the BayArena, Christian Nerlinger and Mario Basler gave Bayern two goals back. However, in the final minutes, attacker Markus Feldhoff scored twice to earn a historic 5-2 victory.

3. Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 Bayern Munich (2023-24)

Ironically, thanks to Josip Stanišić, a Bayern loanee, the hosts took the lead within the first eighteen minutes and never looked back.

Alejandro Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong scored more goals to increase the lead and brighten the scoreline. In actuality, their opponents never appeared to be able to compete to win the match. They managed just one shot on goal, and their xG total was 0.27, which is a club record since the XG started in 2019–20.

2. Bayer Leverkusen 1-5 Bayern Munich (2021-22)

On October 17, 2021, Leverkusen were once more seen as one of Bayern’s main competitors. The Bavarians, however, would have none of it. In just 37 minutes, they had demolished Bayer 5-0. The score was 5-1 at the end of the match.

A brace from Serge Gnabry and Robert Lewandowski, while a solitary goal from Thomas Muller put the game to bed. Patrik Schick scored a consolation goal for the host.

1. Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 Bayern Munich (2022-23)

Bayern played Leverkusen on March 19, 2023, in the team’s debut game under head coach Xabi Alonso.

Joshua Kimmich gave the Bavarians the lead, but they never held the upper hand in the contest. Exequiel Palacios of Bayer converted two penalties to swing the score in Leverkusen’s favour. Munich’s club hierarchy made the unexpected choice to fire coach Julian Nagelsmann a few days following the team’s 2-1 loss.
