Has Kylian Mbappe ever scored a free kick in his career?

The star player’s free kick record isn’t that great.

As Kylian Mbappe’s grounded shot went past an outstretched Wojciech Szczesny’s flailing arm, it marked a remarkable moment in the Frenchman’s career. Despite the match not ending in Real Madrid‘s favour that night (as the Los Blancos lost 3-2), it defined a moment or rather an achievement, that has eluded the Madrid superstar.

For the first time in his life, Kylian scored a free-kick goal. That too against his club’s arch rival, Barcelona, in an all-so-important match. In a career that has already spanned ten years, both for club and country, Mbappe has never had the opportunity to celebrate a free kick until that fateful Copa del Rey final day.

Had Kylian Mbappe never scored from a free kick before?

Amidst all this hullaballoo in regards to Mbappe’s recent free kick goal, there are people that believe Mbappe has already scored a goal from a dead-ball situation against Leganes. The ball was, however, passed to Fran Garcia, who stopped it only for Kylian Mbappe to curl in a banger.

However, if the IFAB rules on the FA website are to be acknowledged, then surely the goal has to be disregarded as it goes against the rules. According to the official rules, if the ball is kicked and it moves, it cannot be deemed as a dead-ball situation anymore. That will invariably go down as a goal from open play.

More so, you cannot have an assist on a free kick. Honestly, it’s hard to argue against that point.

On a funny note, the goal, however, shut down the account of a certain X user who had made a page dedicated to the Paris-born player. The account was infamous for doing a countdown adding up the days Kylian Mbappe did not score from a free kick. Now that the 26-year-old has finally scored, the user has decided to close his Twitter handle.
