Have USA ever won the Copa America?
USA are hosting 2024 Copa America.
The host USA got off to a perfect start in the 2024 Copa America with a dominating 2-0 win over tournament minnows Bolivia at AT&T Stadium.
Captain Christian Pulisic delivered a stellar performance with a goal and an assist, as first-half goals from him and AS Monaco forward Folarin Balogun assured a comfortable win for the United States in the Group C opener.
The USMNT will hope to book their place in the knockout rounds of the competition when they face third-placed Panama in their upcoming matchup at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
With a talented and young squad at his disposal, Gregg Berhalter will be looking to guide this team into the business end of the tournament with an underdog chance of winning the coveted honor in front of their fans.
Heading into this home tournament, the USA has never won the Copa America in its history. The Copa America has historically been South America’s major football competition, with only CONMEBOL member nations being invited to participate.
With the United States being a member of CONCACAF, their participation in the Copa America has primarily been as a guest nation over the years, limiting their appearances in the tournament to a mere four times prior to the 2024 edition (1993, 1995, 2007, 2016).
In these four appearances, the USMNT suffered two group stage exits: once in their debut 1993 campaign and another in the 2007 Copa America.
Their best performance occurred during the 1995 Copa America, where they entered the competition as massive underdogs but defied expectations by topping their group and defeating powerhouses such as Argentina, sending shockwaves throughout the football world. However, their unbelievable journey was halted in the semi-finals by a narrow loss to Brazil.
The United States, led by captain Clint Dempsey, enjoyed a similar run during their home tournament in the 2016 Copa America when they again topped their group stage with an unbeaten display. However, this time around, their momentum was brought to a surprising early end in the quarterfinals by a shock defeat to Ecuador.
The 2024 Copa America provides the USMNT with the dream opportunity of delivering something special at home in front of their own fans as they look to reconcile for the disappointing premature end of their last campaign, which also started on a promising note.
