The Blues are among the clubs from Europe to play in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.

With the Blues scheduled to go to the United States to compete in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, Chelsea’s season is far from an end.

The 32-team Club World Cup is an expanded format and will be played in 11 American locations between June 14 and July 13.

Teams from all six continental confederations, including Premier League teams Manchester City and Chelsea, will compete in the event. However, teams like Arsenal, Manchester United, and Liverpool will not be present.

What is the reason behind the Blues’ participation in the Club World Cup 2025 this summer?

Why are Chelsea playing in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025?

If a club have won a continental club tournament during any of the four most recent seasons prior to the 2024–2025 season, they are automatically eligible to compete in the tournament.

Chelsea are qualified for the competition because they were one of the most recent Champions League winners (2021). With 12 clubs, Europe is the most featured region. South America comes in second with six participating teams.

Asia, Africa, North America, and the Central American Federation each have four clubs. The US, as hosts, have been granted an additional spot, whereas Oceania just get one.

Chelsea and Manchester City, who were both winners of the Champions League in the four years before the current campaign, will participate this summer at the expense of their Premier League opponents since FIFA regulations limit the number of clubs from the same nation to two.

The top two teams from each of the eight groups advance to the competition’s knockout stage after each group’s participants play one another.

Prior to the actual final, which is scheduled to take place on July 13 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the knockout stage will include a Round of 16, quarterfinal and semi-final stage.

Chelsea have previously participated in two Club World Cups, in 2013 and 2022, after their Champions League wins in respective years.
