Many English clubs have won the title after being at the top of the table on Christmas day.
With the year coming to an end every time a Premier League team that finishes first going into Christmas day goes on to win the league.
In 16 seasons out of 32 – the team that remains at the top of the league on Christmas Day goes on to win the title. However, Liverpool’s record compared to other sides is much worse.
This is the seventh time Liverpool are at the top of the table on Christmas day, but their only success has come in 2019-20 since the top-flight’s 1992 rebrand.
Liverpool are the only team to have remained summit of the Premier League most times in history – 21 times, winning 11 of the previous 20.
On being top of the Premier Legaue table at Christmas, boss Arne Slot said: “It tells you we are a very good team. Still three games to go until halfway, but we are a hard team to beat. If it was easy to win the league then every team would do it.”
When we look back at other clubs, Arsenal went into Christmas day on top of the table for the fourth time last season – but fell short to win the trophy on three occasions.
Meanwhile, Chelsea, Manchester City, and one-time winners Blackburn Rovers and Leicester City sustained their form at the top of the standing on 25th December and won the title.
On the other hand, only four times clubs who have finished below first on Christmas day have won the title. Man City who were fifth during this time six points adrift of Arsenal with a game in hand, finished the season winning the title fourth successive time.
Other teams to accomplish this feat have been Manchester United, having been fifth in 1996-97, Arsenal (sixth in 1997-98) and Pep Guardiola’s City again (eighth in 2020-21).
How do teams perform at the top during Christmas?
Manchester United are the only team to have won the league five times when they remained summit of the standing going into Christmas day out of seven. Manchester City have always been the winners when they have gone on to Christmas day on top of the table.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are the only club to have won the league when they were at the top of the league (5), on 25th December. In contrast, Arsenal are winless in the title race when they were on top of the table on Christmas day.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have barely tasted success when they led the table on Christmas day as they are the only side to have been at the summit of the standing during that eve the most (5), they won the title in (2019-20) from Christmas Days spent the top of the table.
Now this will be the seventh time they have remained top of the league on the big occasion and with the season still not over it will be interesting to see how the season unfolds for them when the next year begins.
