Is Ange Postecoglou the man to lead Tottenham Hotspur to silverware?

Spurs have not won a trophy since 2007–08.

After their 1-0 loss to Arsenal in the North London derby, Tottenham Hotspur’s manager had said he always wins the title in his second season with the club.

Ange Postecoglou said, “I just stated a fact… should I lie?”

“I am not sure how am I supposed to answer something that’s true and it seems like I upset some people for some reason”.

Well, he certainly did not lie as his previous managerial records at other clubs have seen him win titles. But there is a massive difference between winning the title in the Premier League and any other league. When you are the manager of Spurs, who have not tasted silverware since 2007-08, makes one wonder if the Australian was being overconfident with his remarks.

Since taking charge of the club last season, the team has been riding high on form and playing intriguing football. It seemed that Spurs might be able to finally break their trophy course, but as the 2023-24 season wore on their performance dwindled. They ended up finishing fifth in the league.

However, it was a decent finish under a manager who was new to the league and implementing his system. A lot of hopes were placed this season that Spurs would start the new season on a high note but that has not been the case. They are currently 13th in the league with four points out of four games.

Winning the league will certainly be one of the toughest challenges for Ange Postecoglou but he can still win the FA Cup or EFL Cup. Tottenham have transformed a lot under the former Celtic manager. The 2024-25 season has just started and hopefully, they can alleviate their performance.

Will Ange Postecoglou break Tottenham trophy curse?

When he was appointed as their head coach last season many did not have the idea of his philosophy. The 59-year-old likes his side to play an entertaining brand of football which means highline football. He is also a fan of playing possession-based progressive football similar to Brighton and Manchester City.

Last season Spurs seemed like they adapted quickly to his style before a slump in their performance during the end of the season.

Making Tottenham into a title-winning team will certainly take more than one or two seasons as the last time the Spurs were a title-contending side was under Mauricio Pochettino. Pochettino almost led them to the title in 2014-15 before Leicester City prevailed over them and won the Premier League title.

Given Manchester City‘s dominance under Pep Guardiola, it’s certainly very tough to win the league. We have seen in the last years how Arsenal and Liverpool have continued to challenge them but have always come short.

Spurs, however, have a superior record versus City. They only require City’s winning mentality. Since, although Arsenal appeared to be breaking City’s title monopoly in the last two seasons, City’s performance in decisive games has helped seal the titles.

The club’s board should support Postecoglou and give him time if he is to rebuild Tottenham into a title-contending squad. Postecoglou will also need the board’s backing for the players he wants to bring in.

However, for now, he can certainly take them to FA Cup or EFL Cup success or even both, but winning the Premier League title will certainly take two or three years.
