Bayern beat Leverkusen 3-0 in the Champions League last 16’s first leg.

In their Round of 16 first leg at the Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich handily trounced Bayer Leverkusen 3-0, giving them a significant lead going into the second leg. In their last six meetings, it was their first triumph over the reigning Bundesliga champions.

On this ideal evening, though, the Bavarians’ captain, Manuel Neuer, was substituted by Jonas Urbig when he was injured in the 58th minute of play. The 38-year-old goalie, who made his 150th outing in the league, seemed to hurt himself while celebrating his team’s second goal of the evening, which came from Jamal Musiala.

Despite his smile as he left the field, many were worried that the injury would prevent him from playing in the tie’s second leg. Later, during the news conference following the game, head coach Vincent Kompany provided additional information about the situation:

‘At this moment, I have no news about Manuel. But it is true that when he celebrated the goal, he injured himself. It looks like his calf, but we will have to see now.”

I don’t want to put too much pressure on Jonas [Urbig] or Manu. We have had times without Harry Kane, Musiala and Joshua Kimmich this season and we have also played without Manuel, so we will just have to do it without him again.

The team verified the severity of his goalie’s injury this morning. The German international Manuel Neuer be out for the foreseeable future due to a torn muscle fiber in his right calf. As a result, the 38-year-old will not play in the match against Bochum this weekend and will most definitely not play in the second leg against Bayer next week.

Kompany stated that the match is still not over, though Bayern will be heading to Leverkusen on Tuesday to play in the quarterfinals with a three-goal lead.

“We played well for one half, not of the game, but of the tie,” he said. “In the second-half, in Leverkusen, we have to play the same way.”
