Pep Guardiola provides an update on the Norwegian star’s injury.
Erling Haaland sitting on the ground holding his knee against Newcastle United “scared” Pep Guardiola. But the coach is certain he will be fit for Manchester City’s crucial Champions League return leg matchup with Real Madrid.
Haaland was treated on the field by the club’s physiotherapists before the 24-year-old decided to leave the game.
Courtesy of a hat-trick from the January acquisition Omar Marmoush and a goal from James McAtee saw City beat Newcastle 4-0. But the main topic of conversation following the match was not the outcome but rather the potential severity of Haaland’s injury.
During his post-match media obligations, Guardiola spoke to reporters in a positive manner, indicating his confidence in Haaland’s ability to play against Real Madrid.
“When he was down, everyone was scared but he got up and walked smiling like always,” Guardiola said. “I didn’t speak to him or the doctors but the doctors didn’t come with bad news so hopefully he is fine.”
Although City have had trouble both at home and in Europe, Haaland has continued to hit the net frequently. In addition to his 19 Premier League goals, he has scored eight more in the Champions League, bringing his season total to 27.
He didn’t need to help out City against Newcastle, though, as Marmoush took centre stage. Guardiola, predictably, praised the Egyptian player’s performance.
“The highlights are for him, of course,” Guardiola remarked. “Three goals, we knew it – in Germany at Frankfurt he made good numbers.
“The dynamic of the group was good and performance was good. He showed what he is. Hopefully he can handle the biggest compliments that are coming. It’s non-stop.
“It’s so simple, when you play good everyone adapts quickly but when you don’t play good, you need time. It’s not difficult. When we played against Chelsea, he played good and we won. He’s a player that we missed, his movements in behind and his pace.
