It was a failure: Kylian Mbappe reflects on France's poor Euro 2024 campaign

Mbappe will next be presented as a Real Madrid player soon
Star forward Kylian Mbappe made a scathing comment on France’s performance against Spain and said it was a failure and also blamed himself for the defeat for not being at his best. Mbappe who has always shone on major tournaments is yet to arrive in Euros.
The forward never scored in Euros until his penalty against Poland, but the Real Madrid-bound star didn’t have an impactful tournament failing to make things happen. The forward first played in a major competition in 2018 when he arrived at the World Cup and lit up the competition.
He led France to the 2018 World Cup title at just 18 and scored four times as the Les Bleus won the competition after 20 years. He was a revelation at the competition and the world finally got to witness the amount of talent Mbappe had.
He once again had an impactful competition at the 2022 World Cup finishing as the top scorer and scoring twice to force the game into penalties against Argentina, where they lost. But why has Mbappe not been able to replicate his World Cup performances in Euros?
In the 2020 Euros, high hopes were placed on Mbappe to take France to the championship but the forward blanked in the tournament and missed a crucial penalty against Switzerland in the round of 16, resulting in the Les Bleus elimination.
And now another Euro has gone to failure for Mbappe who managed to open his account at the competition but has been a peripheral figure and hasn’t been made any influence.
Following their defeat to Spain in the semi-final Mbappe described this competition as a failure and also took the blame, saying:
“In football you’re good or not good. I wasn’t good”.
“My Euro was a failure”.
“I wanted to be European champion… I will now go on holiday, I will rest well, it will do me a lot of good, then I will get ready to start a new life. There’s a lot to do”.
Mbappe frustration makes sense because he is aware that he wasn’t impactful for his national team who rode on luck until the semi-final. France managed only two goals, and seeing it from a team that boasts such a top-quality attacking side is really concerning.
France’s poor performance can have many reasons, such as the way Didier Deschamps has set the team in all the games. Mbappe couldn’t inflict much damage with his pace and ability to dribble and in every game he appeared isolated most of the time.
He barely had support from midfield as Deschamps rotated his midfield but couldn’t find the exact dynamic. For a team like France, it was certainly a failure and Mbappe who will start his new journey at a new club will be looking to move on from the defeat and start a fresh life at a new club.
