The midfielder will leave the club at the end of the season.

‘It wasn’t great,’ said Kevin De Bruyne, a midfielder for Manchester City, on the heartbreak of not getting a new contract offer from the team.

The 33-year-old talked to the media following City’s 2-0 victory against Everton on Saturday, discussing the behind-the-scenes action that resulted in his announcement of his departure from the Etihad Stadium earlier in April.

Even though Kevin De Bruyne hasn’t exactly performed well in the Premier League this season, it’s evident that he still believes in himself. He is upset that the team has decided to let him go when his current contract expires.

According to Kevin De Bruyne, “there was a little bit (of shock)” when he found out he wouldn’t be offered a contract extension.

He further said: “I didn’t have any offer from them through the whole year and the club made a decision. Obviously, I was a bit surprised but I have to accept it. Honestly, I still think I can perform at this level like I’m showing but I understand that clubs have to make decisions.“

“It was half a week till I reported it out and it wasn’t nice. My family weren’t home. They were on holiday so it was a bit weird but it is what it is… I told (Txiki Begiristain, sporting director and Ferran Soriano, CEO) that I feel like I still have a lot to give. I know I’m not 25 anymore, but I still feel like I can do my job.”

Over the past two seasons, the Belgium international has failed to maintain consistent form. As he has aged, injuries have become more frequent.

However, as demonstrated in a spectacular performance against Crystal Palace earlier this month, De Bruyne is still capable of turning a top-tier match on its head at the age of 33. There will undoubtedly be a number of clubs interested in signing him when his City deal expires.

Although it’s clear that the Belgian player isn’t ready to retire just yet, few teams can match his outrageous Etihad salary and hand him a two or three-year contract.
