The Frenchman seems to have recovered his rhythm at Los Blancos.
Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe has acknowledged that he had hit “rock bottom” before regaining his form again at his new club.
The Frenchman has had difficulty achieving the heights to which he has grown accustomed since leaving PSG in the summer. He had to cope with a number of disappointments in his first few months in Spain, but he was prodigious during his time in Paris and consistently excelled.
In a Champions League match that Real Madrid lost to Liverpool, Mbappe squandered a penalty kick and then brushed his lines again from 12 yards out when Real were behind against Athletic Bilbao.
The World Cup champion acknowledged that he needed that slump to bounce back, but he has since noticed an improvement in his play, scoring their first goal in their victory over Sevilla this past weekend.
I can do a lot more: Kylian Mbappe
Mbappé told Real Madrid TV: “I can do a lot more. I know that I have a lot more in my legs. In the last few games I’ve played better. The game in Bilbao was good for me. I hit rock-bottom; I missed a penalty. It was the moment to realise that I have to give my all for this shirt and play with more personality.”
“I think we’ve gotten to know each other better,” Mbappe said on his recent improvements. “I came into the team and that changes a lot of things, but now, as [coach Carlo Ancelotti] has said, my adaptation has finished and I feel good. We can see on the pitch that I understand my teammates better, and the whole team is playing better.”
Earlier this month, the Frenchman scored when Los Blancos defeated Pachuca of Mexico to win the Intercontinental Cup. In addition to helping Real win the UEFA Super Cup, that was his second professional trophy with the team.
With their victory, Real Madrid are now just one point behind their city rivals, Atletico Madrid, who defeated Barcelona late on Saturday to take the lead. After a sluggish start, Ancelotti, who had been linked to the exit, now feels that the team has bonded and is optimistic about what can be accomplished going into the season.
