The Frenchman has missed two spot-kicks so far.

Kylian Mbappe has called it a “big mistake” after squandering another penalty in another Real Madrid defeat. This one comes after missing against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League recently.

The World Cup winner fluffed his lines once more. This time it was against Athletic Club in LaLiga. In that match, Mbappe had an opportunity to equalize the score, but Julen Agirrezabala saved his spot-kick. This is another setback from a 12-yard attempt having already fluffed against Liverpool in the Champions League.

Mbappe’s miss proved to be costly as Real lost the match 2-1. Jude Bellingham’s successful penalty-taking attempt against Getafe has raised questions about why the Frenchman is still used. However, the 25-year-old has promised to bounce back from another loss.

During a trial start to life in Madrid, Mbappe shared a message on social media:

“Bad result. A big mistake in a match where every detail counts. I take full responsibility for it. A difficult moment but it’s the best time to change this situation and show who I am.”

When asked if Real Madrid would continue to support Mbappe, head coach Carlo Ancelotti responded to the media by saying:

Mbappé is sad about the penalty, yes… but it can happen. Sometimes you score the penalty, sometimes not. I’m not gonna judge a performance by the penalty”.

Mbappe has made 20 appearances in all competitions and scored ten goals, but more was projected of him in the Spanish city. Real Madrid, who have a game in hand on their El Clasico rivals and are now four points below leaders Barcelona in the LaLiga standings. They will play again on Saturday when they travel to Girona.

But another penalty miss will sting the player given he had a chance to equalise the score for Los Blancos and put the match under their control. This miss could cost him his rank among the spot-kick takers at the club.

Mbappé’s miss was his second penalty miss in less than a week, and both occurred at critical times when Real Madrid needed to get closer. The opposition goalkeeper stopped both penalties.
