LaLiga suspends broadcasting rights with GXR over payment issues: Report

Fans across India have recently missed out on Spanish top-division matches.

According to SportBusiness, Spain’s LaLiga is in shambles in India because the league has cut off their signal to Galaxy Racer (GXR) for non-payment.

For exclusive broadcast rights in the Indian subcontinent, LaLiga inked a six-year contract with media company GXR last year, spanning 2024–2025 to 2029–2030. However, the deal has already encountered significant problems in its first season.

GXR also purchased the rights to Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 from the French Professional Football League (LFP) for a minimum of four seasons, from 2024–2025 until 2027–2028.

While Ligue 1 has not been covered in India for two weeks, LaLiga’s coverage ceased over the weekend.

The Dubai-based GXR, which has so far focused mostly on gaming and esports, revealed in September that it had acquired the broadcast rights to Ligue 1, LaLiga, and Italy’s Serie A. Over the course of the weekend, Serie A coverage was still accessible on the GXR website.

Due to GXR’s inexperience as a broadcaster in the industry, the accords, which SportBusiness initially reported were almost finalized in July, caught Indian media organizations off guard.

On Friday, the company’s @GXR_World handle on X posted: “Hey GXR fans, unfortunately, due to technical issues, we won’t be streaming LALIGA matches this weekend. We’re working on resolving this as quickly as possible to bring you back the action you love! Thank you for your patience and support.”

SportBusiness further revealed that GXR and the leagues are looking for a way to resolve the payment problems.

GXR had technical issues with its LaLiga broadcast earlier in the season, which prevented them from streaming certain games. That had nothing to do with money, but rather with actual technical difficulties.

GXR’s free-to-view website and app, which don’t require registration, were showcasing the game with their live rights to LaLiga and Ligue 1 matches.

Over the past few cycles, the value of Indian football league rights has generally decreased. For all but large cricket franchises and premium properties with widespread international appeal, like the Premier League, rights-holders have had difficulty generating fierce competition among broadcasters.
