Lamine Yamal becomes youngest player ever to win a major international trophy

Yamal broke Pele’s record for the youngest starter.
Spanish sensation Lamine Yamal etched his name in football history on Sunday, becoming the youngest player ever to start and win a major international tournament final. At just 17 years and one day old, Yamal played a crucial role in Spain’s 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final.
The Barcelona prodigy’s appearance in the starting lineup broke the previous record held by Brazilian legend Pelé, who was 17 years and 249 days old when he won the 1958 World Cup. Yamal’s achievement adds to an already impressive list of “youngest ever” records set during this tournament.
Yamal first made headlines in Spain‘s opening match against Croatia, becoming the youngest player to feature in a European Championship. He then became the youngest scorer in Euro finals history with a goal in the semifinal win over France.
Throughout Euro 2024, Yamal showcased his talent with four goal contributions – one goal and three assists. His standout performance came in the semifinal against France, where he scored a long-range strike and was named Player of the Match.
Spain coach De la Fuente praised Yamal’s impact, calling him “a genius” after the France match. The young forward’s contributions were vital in Spain’s journey to a record fourth European Championship title.
Yamal’s rise has been meteoric. He joined Barcelona’s youth academy at age seven and made his first-team debut last year at 15. In the 2023-24 season, at 16, he appeared in 50 matches for Barcelona across all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing ten assists.
The final whistle at Euro 2024 saw Spanish players rush onto the field in celebration, with Yamal at the heart of the festivities. As the youngest member of the squad, his victory is particularly significant, marking the start of what could be a long and successful international career.
