Messi to play his fifth Copa America final.

Lionel Messi has second time reached back-to-back finals of Copa America after previously doing so at a string in the 2015 and 2016 editions. Messi’s last final saw Argentina win 1-0 against Brazil in the 2021 Copa America.

In the Copa America 2024, Messi’s side defeated Canada 2-0 in the semi-final to guarantee their place in the final, where they will either face Colombia or Uruguay.

However, the 37-year-old isn’t having the sort of competition everyone expected from him as Messi only has one goal and one assist. The Inter Miami forward has also faced injury issues since coming to the competition which has hampered him to play at full fitness.

This could be Messi’s last Copa America as he is reaching the age where he might have to make a call on his career. But the forward still has another chance to win a trophy for Argentina before he makes any announcement. The longevity of his career allowed him to take part in many finals previously as well.

The former Barcelona star will play his fifth Copa America final but the most surprising thing is he has never scored a goal in the final, despite boasting 16 goals in the tournament.

Lionel Messi’s record in Copa America finals

The striker’s first taste of Copa America final sadness came in 2007 as Brazil easily defeated Argentina in Venezuela, winning 3-0 thanks to goals from Dani Alves, Baptista, and an own goal by Ayala.

Messi’s second upset occurred in Santiago in 2015 when Argentina and Chile, the local team, drew 0-0 in the Copa America final. The only player from Argentina to score a penalty was Messi, and Chile emerged victorious due to Gonzalo Higuaín and Éver Banega’s misses.

In the subsequent year (2016), Chile and Argentina participated in the Copa America Centenario, which was held in the United States. Once again, history was repeated, with Chile emerging victorious.

The defeat impacted so much that Messi decided to quit the national team but returned back and participated in the 2019 Copa America where Argentina lost in the semi-final. Messi’s shot at glory finally came in 2021 Copa America where they won 1-0 against Brazil.

Now once again they are in the final and the forward will have a shot at adding another Copa America trophy to his cabinet.
