An interview between Martinez and the football legend at the 2022 World Cup set off the incident. It came after Argentina defeated Croatia 3-0 in the semi-finals, with the Inter Miami player scoring the first goal from the penalty spot and helping Julian Alvarez score the third.

After the game, Martinez, a reporter for Television Publica, spoke with the captain and complimented him on leading the country to the World Cup final. The journalist concluded the conversation with a touching message for Messi.
“I just want to tell you that no matter the results, there’s something that no one can take from you, and it’s the fact you resonated with Argentinians, every single one,” Martinez said.
“I’m being serious. There’s no kid who doesn’t have your team shirt, no matter if it’s a fake, real or a made up one.
“Truly, you made your mark in everyone’s life. And that, to me, is beyond winning any World Cup. No one can take that from you and this is my gratitude, for the amount of happiness you bring to a lot of people.”
Fans originally applauded the reporter’s candour after the conversation went viral. However, some spectators misinterpreted their dynamic due to the increased emphasis.
Martinez has now disclosed that after unintentionally being the centre of attention, she got a message from Antonela, Lionel Messi’s wife. When Antonela reached out and offered her assistance, the journalist was finding it difficult to deal with the rumours.

“There was no need for her to message me. But out of the blue, she messaged me saying: ‘Sofi, don’t worry, don’t listen to that nonsense.’ “
