The former Real Madrid star failed to score in competition for first time in his career.

Theo Hernandez scored the winning penalty, sending Diogo Costa the wrong way and ending Portugal’s quest for Euro 2024. The great Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal removed his captain’s armband and strode off. Unlike the FIFA World Cup 2022, he made the decision to hold back his tears this time.

Ronaldo’s European Championship career came to an end as Portugal lost 3-5 to France in penalties. More significantly, it meant that Roberto Martinez and his team had to confront a difficult issue: could the nation’s top scorer still benefit the national team? Portugal has a talented squad, and its Euro campaign has been nothing short of disappointing.

Talented individuals like Bruno Fernandes, who entered the Euros off the back of a stellar Premier League campaign for Manchester United, scoring ten goals and providing eight assists from 35 games, made up its final third.

Bernardo Silva, an attacking midfielder, contributed six goals and nine assists to Manchester City’s fourth straight Premier League triumph.

Martinez, however, failed in his attempt to assemble a team around Ronaldo at Euro 2024, as Portugal scored just five goals in three games, winning three, and losing on penalties in the quarterfinal.

Ronaldo had a dismal tournament himself; the 39-year-old had 23 shots but failed to score a goal.

However, Portugal won three of the four games they played in 2024 without Ronaldo, scoring an incredible 4.75 goals per game on average. Portugal also managed to score 19 goals in those four games. Selecao’s strong performance before entering the competition makes one question if they are a better side without Ronaldo.

Below take a look at record Ronaldo made in Euro 2024.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to feature in the Euros for the sixth time when he featured against the Czech Republic.
  • An unfortunate record, Ronaldo failed to score in the group stage for the first time in his career in a major competition.
  • Ronaldo’s pass to Bruno Fernandes’ goal against Turkey made him the oldest player to assist in a major tournament
  • Ronaldo eclipsed Karel Poborsky of the Czech Republic in a number of assists and goals in the history of the tournament.
