The Reds face the dreaded possibility of losing several superstar players as free agents next summer.
After Jurgen Klopp’s legendary nine-year stint at the club, Liverpool are set to enter their new era under Dutch manager Arne Slot.
In Klopp’s farewell campaign last season, Liverpool claimed the Carabao Cup, defeating Chelsea 1-0 in the final. The Reds were on the course for an unprecedented quadruple charge, but a mid-season collapse crushed their dreams altogether. Ultimately, they finished in a respectable third place in the Premier League, securing Champions League football in the process after a year-long hiatus.
The Reds are yet to make a signing this transfer window, with smart recruitment being the club’s primary transfer approach. However, another important agenda that is high on Liverpool’s to-do list for this summer is to extend the expiring contracts of their superstar players, which are set to expire in 2025.
With that said, here are the four Liverpool players who are out of contract in the summer of 2025:
Nathaniel Phillips
Defender Nathaniel Phillips is expected to finally leave Liverpool on a permanent deal this summer with just a year left on his current deal. In recent seasons, Phillips has proved to be surplus to requirements at Merseyside, as he has been loaned out on three different occasions to AFC Bournemouth, Celtic FC, and Cardiff City, respectively.
During his most recent loan spell at Cardiff last season, the 27-year-old centre-back made 18 appearances in the EFL Championship. His most defining moment in a Liverpool shirt came all the way back in the injury-ridden 2020-21 season for the club.
Nathaniel Phillips formed a stellar defensive partnership with Rhys Williams towards the business end of the campaign, guiding the Reds to an impressive third-place finish in the Premier League and securing Champions League football in the process.
Mohamed Salah
Arguably one of the greatest signings in Liverpool’s history has been of the Egyptian king Mohamed Salah. Ever since his €42 million switch from AS Roma in 2017, Salah has gone on to make a staggering 349 appearances for the Reds across all competitions, recording incredible statistics of 211 goals and 89 assists in the process.
During this period, the 32-year-old winger has consistently been one of the best players in the world, winning the complete lot with Liverpool.
With Salah already returning for pre-season training, he is expected to stay at the club this summer. One of the topmost priorities of the revamped sporting structure at Liverpool will be to tie Mohamed Salah down to a new contract, as they face the dreaded possibility of losing one of the greatest players in their club’s history on a free transfer next summer.
Virgil van Dijk
In his six years at the club so far, Virgil van Dijk has already cemented himself as one of the greatest defenders in modern football. Ever since his highly debated €85 million switch from Southampton, Van Dijk has proved his doubters wrong, making 270 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions, winning every possible trophy in the process.
Throughout this period, the 33-year-old centre-back has delivered world-class performances at a consistent level, leading the team from the front. After Jordan Henderson’s departure, Virgil van Dijk was officially named the new club captain last season.
However, the Liverpool hierarchy have put them themselves in a precarious position, as they have let their star Dutch defender’s contract run down with just a year left to expire. With a host of top clubs keeping a close eye on the developments, Liverpool will look to resolve this situation as soon as possible.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
One of the best Liverpool academy products after the great Steven Gerrard has undoubtedly been the local scouser Trent Alexander-Arnold. Ever since his senior debut in 2016 under former manager Jurgen Klopp, Alexander-Arnold has been a mainstay in the Liverpool setup, winning every domestic and international title possible at club level.
The 25-year-old right-back has made over 300 appearances for the Reds, registering unbelievable numbers of 19 goals and 81 assists, making one of the best fullbacks in the world.
During this period, he also created one of the most iconic moments in the club’s history. His incredible assist for the “corner taken quickly” goal sealed Liverpool’s historic 4-3 comeback win over FC Barcelona during the 2018-19 Champions League semifinals. Last season, Trent was named the vice-captain of the club.
With Spanish giants Real Madrid are reportedly looking to add Trent Alexander-Arnold as another Galactico in their star-studded squad, Liverpool will need to soon tie down their future club captain to a long-term contract.
