The forward is likely to miss City’s game against United now.
In Tuesday’s World Cup qualifying match between Egypt and Burkina Faso, Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush sustained a knee ligament injury.
With two matches left, Egypt are still five points ahead of second-place Burkina Faso in Group A, putting them one step closer to earning a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
However, the Pharaohs’ night took a concerning turn when Omar Marmoush was forced off the field after a strong challenge nine minutes into the match.
Mohamed Abu El-Ela, Egypt’s team physician, verified that the injury was “a bruised knee ligament.”
“The player will undergo an X-ray upon his arrival to Cairo [on] Wednesday morning.”
Will Omar Marmoush play in the Manchester derby?
Omar Marmoush joined City for £59 million from Eintracht Frankfurt in January, was injured after a strong challenge in the fourth minute. After being treated on the pitch, he continued to play for a while before Osama Faisal took his position.
The Egyptian Football Association’s X account shared a photo of the player leaving the field with medical personnel, along with the caption, “Omar Marmoush has a bruised knee ligament.”
Marmoush, who has eight goals in 28 games for the team, will also be examined by City’s medical specialists upon his return to England.
After entering as a substitute in City’s 4-0 victory over Wolves the previous weekend, the forward has started the team’s last two Premier League games, losses to Tottenham and Brighton.
Despite Marmoush’s injury, head coach Hossam Hassan was happy with the team’s performance as he told the media:
”It’s a great day for the Egyptian people… I would like to thank every player for their efforts against a tough team that has players in the Premier League, Bundesliga and Ligue 1,” Hassan, the former Egypt striker who led them to the 1990 World Cup, told the On Sport channel.
”Despite playing in Burkina Faso, we played positively and created big chances. At the same time, we maintained balance. We could have scored one or two goals before the end,” he added.
How long will Omar Marmoush be out?
The extent of the injury is yet to be revealed.
How long does a bruised knee take to recover?
A bruised knee’s recovery time for a contusion (soft tissue bruise) can vary from a few days to a few weeks.
Will Marmoush play in City’s next matches?
Nothing is confirmed yet, but his injury doesn’t look serious, and City will examine it when he returns to the club.
