The Red Devils will play the last game of the season today.
After Manchester United’s final Premier League match against Aston Villa, head coach Ruben Amorim is prepared to apologise to the team’s supporters on the field at Old Trafford.
The Old Trafford team’s tumultuous season will come to an end today when they play Unai Emery’s UEFA Champions League qualifying contenders.
When Manchester United lost to Tottenham in the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao, their own dreams of playing in the most renowned tournament in European football vanished.
Their worst domestic season since the 1973–74 relegation season was made worse by that setback. They will miss out on European competition for the second time since 1990, the following season.
But according to Ruben Amorim, it would be a grave error to forgo the customary lap of appreciation in order to recognise the home support.
The 40-year-old former Sporting manager also stated: “It will be an apology, I think that’s clear, I don’t have time for an explanation,” even if he hasn’t chosen exactly what he would say in his end-of-season speech.
“I will be honest with the fans and say what is in my mind and especially my heart.”
Given the general unhappiness with the owners, the Glazer family, and the job cuts that minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has sparked, it won’t be an easy task.
In protest of the club’s management, United’s supporters will march to Old Trafford once more before the game.
“It’s tradition and we have to face it,” he added ahead of the post-match lap of appreciation. “It will be the biggest mistake if we don’t do that.
“I know that the manager addresses the public and I will do that, it’s the least I can do. I have an idea what I want to say but I will decide tomorrow. If ever there was a season that we need to do it, it’s this one.”
But according to officials, Ruben Amorim is happy to talk to the great majority of supporters, who agree that Amorim is the ideal person to spark a renaissance.
