Manchester United beat Arsenal 5-3 on penalties to progress further in FA Cup

United were reduced to 10 men in the game.

After an exciting FA Cup third-round match at the Emirates, 10-man Manchester United defeated Arsenal on penalties.

Mikel Arteta’s team was the favourites heading into this game but were thwarted by a resolute United defence after being encouraged by their display against Liverpool last weekend.

The Gunners’ injury problems were exacerbated when Gabriel Jesus was carted off with what looked to be a catastrophic knee injury. After the interval, United took the lead when Bruno Fernandes masterfully completed Alejandro Garnacho’s counterattack.

However, Diogo Dalot, one of several United players to wind up in the book, received a second yellow card for a vicious challenge on Mikel Merino, so their joys were short-lived.

Shortly after, Gabriel Magalhaes equalized with a set-piece, and they attempted to take advantage after Kai Havertz won a penalty that, on closer examination, should not have been awarded.

But justice was served when Martin Odegaard’s spot-kick was expertly saved by an outstanding Altay Bayindir, tying the score and forcing extra time.

Arsenal then wasted multiple chances to secure the victory in normal time, with Havertz squandering a fantastic close-range opportunity and Bayindir making crucial saves. Then, in the first half of extra time, Matthijs de Ligt made a stunning clearance.

In the match for penalties, Bayindir stopped another penalty kick, this one from Havertz, and the holders proceeded to the fourth-round draw. Joshua Zirkzee had a chance to nick it when David Raya pushed his diverted attempt onto the post.

Zirkzee scored Ruben Amorim’s team’s fifth flawless penalty after Fernandes, Amad Diallo, Leny Yoro, and Lisandro Martinez all scored first.

United will be happy with the win after their continued run of defeats before they met Liverpool, as they hope to turn around the tide in the second half of the season. They will next be in action against Southampton on Thursday night.
