This United fan last cut his hair in October 2024.

Frank Ilett from Oxford University, who is currently residing in Spain, made an unusual vow: he won’t cut his hair until Manchester United wins five straight games across all competitions.

Ilett has been a United fan since his childhood. He has witnessed the club’s dominance and the fall from grace. Ever since he decided not to cut his hair, he has become an overnight influencer who has 644k followers on Instagram.

He did his college from Oxford Cherwell Valley College before pursuing his career in marketing. But ever since he embarked on a vow not to cut his hair, he has now turned into a famous social media celebrity.

He is now a content creator on social media who posts his day-to-day hair growth. Currently, the influencer has fairly overgrown his hair.

The inconsistency of the Premier League side United under Erik ten Hag was the initial cause of it all, which started in October 2024. Under him, Ilett started his personal challenge on social media and has since documented every outcome on ‘The United Strand.’

What began as a personal struggle quickly attracted a lot of attention. After every game, Ilett updates his Instagram account to let followers know how his hair is doing and the team’s most recent performance. For thousands of fans, his messages have become a ritual as they wait to see if United break the cycle.

His pledge swiftly evolved from a mere fan stunt to a representation of United’s continuous struggle for stability. Ilett’s hair grows longer with every missed chance to put together a winning run, but also with each failed attempt.

The notion of accumulating five consecutive wins, which was commonplace during the Sir Alex Ferguson era, now stands for something far more significant: the necessity of consistency, identity, and structure.

Manchester United were two games shy of achieving the desired five-game run as of November 2025. However, the three-game winning streak came to an end with the 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forrest.

Ilett reveals why he started it

In the advertisement, Mr Ilett, who goes by ‘The United Strand’ on social media, states:

“It just started as a bit of fun really. I didn’t expect it to go on this long, but it’s actually fine. If I’m having a bad hair day, I can just put on a hat.”

Matthijs de Ligt’s late header gave United a point against Tottenham just today. But in the case of Ilett, he will continue to have his “afro-style” hair for some time to come, after not being comforted by that result.
