I'm part of the future here at Manchester United: Harry Maguire on his future
The Red Devils made their intention clear to sell Maguire last season.
Harry Maguire’s future at Manchester United has always been making the rounds since last season. The England international faced an avalanche of criticism last campaign and was jeered off by United fans for blocking his move away.
Things became worse when he became a fifth-choice centre-back below Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and Johnny Evans.
Last season, the former Leicester City defender faced backlash left and right. He was also ripped from the captaincy that was given to Bruno Fernandes. His drop in performance saw him become a peripheral figure at United and Maguire barely received minutes on the pitch.
However, late in October of the previous season, Maguire found his groove again. Under the Dutch boss Erik ten Hag, his improved performance immediately made him a vital defender, which saw fans starting to back him.
But the centre-back ended up suffering a calf injury which saw him miss the FA Cup final and other league games. He also failed to make the England squad for Euro 2024, which the Three Lions lost 2-1 to Spain in the final.
Despite Maguire recovering his form and now coming back from injury, he has been linked with an exit. Manchester United seem to be open to selling the defender in order to make a profit and make room for more signings. But he has rebuffed those rumours in his recent interview and said: “To be honest, everything I’ve heard is that I’m part of the future here at Manchester United.”
“I’m ready to fight for the biggest trophies,” Harry Maguire told Sky Sports.
Despite being one of United’s most costly acquisitions, Maguire has had a patchy time with the team. The main factor that has forced United to sell the player is his spotty performance. They were on the verge of selling him last summer, but he refused to leave.
However, he did bounce back with his performance late into the season. It will be interesting to see how things pan out for the 31-year-old as United have signed Leny Yoro. Yoro could partner with Martinez at the heart of the United defence, which means Maguire might serve as a third-choice defender at the club.
We have a long way to go before the transfer window shuts down. Anything can happen during that time as the Red Devils are looking to sell a few players to make more additions.
