The Red Devils are back in Europa League tonight

Manchester United, who are still hoping to win the Europa League to cap off a terrible season, will fly to France on Thursday night to play Olympique Lyon at the Groupama Stadium in the first leg of their quarterfinal match.

Man United fought off a drab and dismal goalless draw with rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday, five days after losing 1-0 at Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. It was a lacklustre match in which neither team made a splash.

Man United, who are now languishing in 13th place with just 38 points from 31 games, seven points below the top half of the league, are headed for their worst season ever in the division, making European qualification through the Premier League an impractical goal.

However, there is still a chance to win the Europa League, and Manchester United are the only team not to have lost this season (W6 D4). They most recently defeated Real Sociedad 5-2 on aggregate in the round of 16, with captain Bruno Fernandes scoring an incredible hat-trick in a 4-1 second-leg victory last month.

In reality, Man United have only lost one of their last 21 Europa League games—a 3-0 loss to Sevilla in April 2023, the only time they have failed to score during this run.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils have won all 11 of their previous European first-leg knockout matches since falling to Barcelona 1-0 in the 2019 Champions League.

They will hope to continue this winning run in the competition when they take on a French club and Amorim will employ a strong lineup to get the job done.

Manchester United predicted lineup vs Lyon

Formation (3-4-2-1):

Onana; Mazraoui, Maguire, Yoro; Dalot, Ugarte, Casemiro, Dorgu; Fernandes, Garnacho; Zirkzee

While Matthijs de Ligt (ankle) and Kobbie Mainoo (calf), the latter has resumed training and will be evaluated before kickoff. Lisandro Martinez (knee), Amad Diallo, Ayden Heaven (both ankle), and Jonny Evans (back) are still out due to injury.

After missing four months due to a hamstring injury, Luke Shaw is ready to play, but Patrick Dorgu is anticipated to stay at left wing-back, and Harry Maguire is well enough to play as centre-back even though he was substituted early in the Manchester derby.

Another player in the running to play is Mason Mount, who might start in midfield. Even though Alejandro Garnacho has only scored once in his past 27 appearances for Manchester United, he is expected to keep his position in the attack. Amorim will decide whether to recall Joshua Zirkzee or continue with Rasmus Hojlund up front.
