Liverpool star Mohamed Salah's photo appears in Cameroon voter register

The Cameroon voter register makes startling mistakes during elections.

When Cameroonians turned out to cast their ballots in Sunday’s presidential election (October 12, 2025), they were drawn to an odd mistake on the register: the image of Egyptian football player Mohamed Salah at the Ngaoundéré III polling booth.

The picture, which was also accessible on the official website of ELECAM, Cameroon’s electoral management organisation, was verified by fact-checks conducted by other media sites. The initial letters of a “AZERTY” keyboard represent the name associated with the image.

On social media, the error generated a lot of conversation as people joked about its appearance and voiced doubts about the accuracy of the voter register.

As vote counting continues nationwide, ELECAM are yet to release a statement. Twelve candidates ran against Biya in the election.

The whole thing started when the French media Instant Foot shared a screenshot of a registration card with Salah’s picture on it from the commission’s official website. This startled many onlookers, prompting them to doubt the legitimacy of the nation’s electronic registration system.

Surprisingly, the name that was affixed to the picture was not a real person but rather a random string of characters that started with “AZERTY,” which corresponds to the letters on a French keyboard. This further supports the idea that registration was either random or the consequence of a system error.

On social media, people immediately started talking about the incident and posting amusing pictures of “Cameroonian Mohamed Salah.”

The electoral commission, meanwhile, has not spoken out or provided an official explanation for the image’s appearance or method of inclusion in the system.
