The host nation, Morocco, will play Mali in the second round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. If they win, they will keep their advantage in Group A.

The Eagles had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Zambia in their opening match, while the Atlas Lions started the tournament with a 2-0 victory over Comoros on Sunday, putting them two points ahead at the top of Group A.

Morocco have won both of the opening games in two of the last three tournaments. A victory versus Mali would virtually assure first place in Group A.

Similar to the hosts, Mali’s campaign started with a missed penalty in the first half of their match against Zambia. Lassine Sinayoko scored from close range to take the advantage after halftime, but the Eagles’ inability to maintain their lead ultimately proved costly.

Despite this, Mali can be encouraged by the fact that they have only lost once in their last six AFCON games (W2, D3) and have gone undefeated in four games (W2, D2).

An already difficult assignment is made more difficult by Mali’s unfavourable recent head-to-head record; in their last four games with the Atlas Lions, they have lost three times and failed to score in the previous three.
