In recent years, many female footballers have bagged record transfer moves.

In recent years, women’s football has grown significantly, breaking attendance records worldwide and securing complex television deals at ever-increasing prices.

Player valuations are increasing quickly as a result of the increased revenue that comes with it. In the winter of 2024 alone, the women’s football transfer mark has been surpassed twice. It has recently eclipsed once more.

An American defender broke the record for the most expensive players in women’s football history. With that, we take a look at the top five most expensive transfers in women’s football history.

5. Keira Walsh: €470k

Early on, Peter Walsh saw his daughter’s natural potential. The numerous family vacations to Spain, where the small child would show up to all the other youngsters who joined in for practice, helped Walsh further refine her flawless technique.

The lifelong City supporter would have left her team for Barcelona, the birthplace of the football style she had been playing since she was a young girl. Walsh joined the Catalan winning side with ease, completely unaffected by the world-record price tag of €470k.

4. Mayra Ramirez: €500K

Despite playing in Colombia’s top level at the age of 16, Mayra Ramirez didn’t stand out for her age in a new league full of teenagers. Even though the Levante striker was one of just two players to finish the 2022–2023 Liga F season with double figures for goals and assists, Barcelona’s all-conquering team outperformed them.

Sam Kerr’s season-ending injury, where she suffered an ACL injury, saw Chelsea accelerate the transfer of Ramirez in January 2024 to West London, making it one of the most expensive transfers in women’s football.

3. Barbra Banda: €681K

Zambia was home to the two highest-priced players in women’s football history in the spring of 2024. Barbra Banda became the third woman to make a record move of over half a million pounds after joining Orlando Pride, barely three weeks after her compatriot Racheal Kundananji joined Bay FC.

2. Racheal Kundananji: €805K

Before breaking the world transfer mark in February 2024, the Zambian international played football on the streets of Chililabombwe with a rolled-up ball of plastic bags. Despite this, she has always had a clear vision of her achievement.

In 2019, Kundananji moved to Europe with the Kazakhstani team BIIK Kazygurt. Three years later, the Spanish team Eibar approached her. The outspoken forward joined Liga F so she could play on a larger stage, even though she was offered five times her current pay to stay in Kazakhstan.

Seeing her talent at Eibar, one of the biggest Spanish clubs Madrid CFF signed her in 2022. Kundananji spent only two seasons there before Bay FC decided to break the bank and sign the versatile player for a record fee.

1. Naomi Girma: €1.06m

American defender Naomi Girma joined Chelsea for a record-breaking $1.1 million (€1.06 million or £890,000). Girma became the most expensive female football player to ever make a transfer worth over $1 million.

It surpassed the two NWSL raids for Zambian internationals Racheal Kundananji and Barbra Banda from last winter. Chelsea were also involved with their move for Colombian forward Mayra Ramirez only a year prior.
