Nemanja Matic calls Andre Onana 'one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United's history'

Matic will face his former side in the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals on Thursday night.

Nemanja Matic didn’t hold back, firing shots at Andre Onana. He even called him “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history” after the custodian’s “way better” claims.

Onana spoke confidently to the media about United’s chances in the lead-up to what might be a pivotal night for Ruben Amorim’s team.

“We all know the importance of this game, we will go there with the winning mentality,” he told reporters. “We have to go there and show who we are. If we are focused, stay compact and together and follow the gameplan we will be winning the game. Of course, it’s not going to be easy but I think we are way better than them.”

His comments were viewed with scepticism, given that United are now in 13th position in the Premier League and have just won three of their last ten games across all competitions.

When questioned about Onana’s comments, Nemanja Matic, who played at Old Trafford from 2017 to 2022, didn’t mince words.

“I don’t know. To say something like that, you need to have courage,” he said. “I respect everyone but I need to answer. When you’re one of the worst goalkeepers in Man Utd’s history, you need to take care about what you are talking. If David de Gea, Peter Schmeichel or Van der Sar said that, I will question myself. But if you are statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Man Utd’s modern history then he needs to show that, before he says so. We will see.”

At best, United’s domestic performance has been inconsistent. Their goalless draw with Manchester City last Sunday didn’t help fans who were already fed up with their lack of consistency. Lyon, on the other hand, enter this matchup in great form, having won eight of their previous ten games.

The French team is gaining a lot of momentum. They will be keen to make an impression against a weak United team whose campaign hasn’t taken off even after Amorim succeeded Erik ten Hag.
