Netherlands's Teun Koopmeiners and Frenkie de Jong ruled out of Euro 2024

With Frenkie de Jong already ruled out, another midfielder joins him.

The Netherlands team’s hope have been severely harmed as midfielder Frenkie de Jong is not going to play in the European Championship due to an ankle injury and so will Teun Koopmeiners.

Following Ronald Koeman’s team’s 4-0 victory over Iceland in their last warmup, the Dutch football federation said that the Barcelona player will not be available for the 2024 European Championship in Germany. On Monday, De Jong observed the game from the sidelines in Rotterdam.

Tests “showed that the ankle is not yet sufficiently resilient” which puts an end to De Jong’s aspirations of participating, according to a statement from Netherlands officials. Tijjani Reijnders, a midfielder for AC Milan, filled in for De Jong on Monday.

“He won’t be fit enough to play at this level for the next three weeks,” Koeman said. “There’s no point keeping him with us.”

Teun Koopmeiners, another midfield player, suffered an injury during the warm-up for the Iceland game, making him questionable for the competition. While waiting for the test results, which are anticipated on Tuesday, Koeman stated, “I have a bad feeling.”

The 1988 European champions, Netherlands, kick off Group D on Sunday against Poland. They then play World Cup runner-ups France and later Austria to round off the group stage.

Ian Maatsen called-up by the Netherlands

Ian Maatsen, a defender for Borussia Dortmund, was called up to the Netherlands team in the nick of time to replace Frenkie de Jong in the squad.

Following Friday night’s exhibition against Iceland, head coach Ronald Koeman said that De Jong would not be able to compete in the competition in Germany due to an ankle injury he sustained.

Little than a week before the Euro opening match, Maatsen was urged to fly back and get ready for the competition while he was on vacation in Greece on Monday.
