Man City suffered a crushing 5-1 defeat recently against Arsenal.
According to Thierry Henry, Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, is “not well mentally” following his abrupt divorce from wife Cristina Serra.
For Guardiola, this season has been especially difficult on both a personal and professional level. City have been experiencing a crisis of confidence and form, and their most recent setback was a crushing 5-1 loss to Arsenal.
The reigning Premier League champions have struggled at home, finishing with four wins in their past ten league games and sitting 12 points behind current league leaders Liverpool. They also had to play until the end of the Champions League league phase to secure a place in the play-offs.
Guardiola’s private life has been similarly in disarray throughout City’s difficult period. It was announced last month that Guardiola and his 36-year wife, Cristina Serra, had made the decision to part ways.
Guardiola’s decision to extend his contract with Manchester City until 2027 is said to have played a major role in the couple’s breakup, according to reports from the Spanish publication Sport.
According to reports, their family had intended to move to the United Arab Emirates, but Serra ended the marriage when Guardiola decided to stay on as manager of England.
It’s not easy to deal with what Pep Guardiola has to deal with outside of football: Thierry Henry
Henry, who played for Barcelona under Pep Guardiola, talked about the psychological toll that personal hardships may take on a football player who is always in the news. Following City’s crushing loss to Arsenal, the Gunners icon expressed his condolences for his old coach on Sky Sports, saying:
“Do I feel sorry about what’s happening to Man City and Pep? Yeah I do, in one thing. It’s not easy to deal with what Pep has to deal with outside of football. I went through that when I went to Barcelona. It’s not easy to deal with stuff like that, when you’re not well mentally.
“You can see that he’s not his usual self. I had to deal with it when I went to Barcelona, I can tell you it’s not easy. No one would like to deal with that while you have to perform all the time. So I think we can understand. Now if you go back on the field, it’s not good enough. I don’t think that they can cope whenever a team can deal with playing them all the way to ninety minutes and challenge them and look them in their eyes all the way.”
