Top seven players who impressed during pre-season 2024
These seven players have performed well in the 2024 pre-season.
Pre-season and club friendlies are a major opportunity for players to impress their managers and showcase their skills and talent. Many players often carve their way into the starting XI after performing well in the pre-season. Many big clubs such as FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City and others have had a great pre-season tour.
These teams have fielded a variety of players, some usually known starting XI players and mainly youngsters. Amongst them, some have stood out and performed well for their clubs.
Let’s take a look at the top seven players who impressed during pre-season 2024.
7. Ethan Nwaneri (Arsenal)
Arsenal‘s youngest first-team player in their history. Ethan Nwaneri had made his senior team debut in the Premier League for Arsenal when he was just 15 years old. This made him the youngest-ever player in the history of English top-flight football.
Ethan played for 84 minutes against Bournemouth and 45 minutes against Manchester United in the pre-season matches. In both matches, Ethan Nwaneri has shown that he’s a skilful and creative attacking midfielder often moving the ball up to the final third. Nwaneri also assisted Gabriel Jesus’s equaliser against Manchester United.
6. Amad Diallo (Manchester United)
Manchester United have had their fair share of problems with wingers over the past few seasons. An injury-stricken Marcus Rashford and an underperforming Antony have left them with very few options. However, in a time like this, Amad Diallo stood out.
Diallo had a difficult start at Manchester United since he was injury-prone and spent some time on loan as well. The 2023/2024 season saw him at his best. Amad Diallo’s pre-season performances have been great considering the fact that he has scored two goals and created the most goalscoring chances for United.
Diallo has played against Real Betis, Rangers, Liverpool and Arsenal. In these matches, it was commendable to see the influence he has had on the game when in possession.
5. Harry Amass (Manchester United)
Yet another Manchester United youngster who has impressed during the 2024 pre-season. The uprising of Harry Amass can potentially solve United’s problem at left-back and provide some much-needed squad depth as well.
Manchester United played quite a few friendlies however it was their bout against Liverpool which drew out Harry Amass’s name. Despite losing to Liverpool, Amass played quite well. The young left-back player an hour for the Red Devils and got the better of Mohamed Salah on some occasions. He even grabbed an assist as well.
4. Joan Martinez (Real Madrid)
The circumstances at Real Madrid after the conclusion of the 2023/2024 season included a lack of defensive options. With the vulnerability of Jesús Vallejo and Carlo Ancelotti unwilling to risk Antonio Rudiger, Joan Martinez was given a chance in the pre-season tour.
Joan Martinez is just 16 years old and plays like a veteran centre-back with plenty of experience. Martinez’s performance against AC Milan was commendable as he won two duels, completed two successful tackles and had a great passing rate in just one half. Overall, his performances in the pre-season tour can potentially lead to Carlo Ancelotti calling him up for the first team.
3. Pablo Torres (FC Barcelona)
FC Barcelona always lives up to its legendary reputation. They have again had a potential breakthrough of a skilful and talented youngster. Pablo Torres is back at Barca after a loan season in Girona.
Torres likes to operate as no. 10, having some freedom to showcase his attacking prowess. He scored in a closed-door friendly against Olot and then against Manchester City as well. His best performance came against City as he created many chances and managed to grab a goal.
2. Oscar Bobb (Manchester City)
Pep Guardiola had trusted Oscar Bobb in the 2023/2024 season and gave him a decent amount of playing time. However, his stellar and consistent performances in the pre-season tour have made him a serious contender for the starting XI.
Bobb has managed to score a goal and assist twice against Celtic, an assist against AC Milan and a great goal against Chelsea as well. Despite his goal contributions, his dribbling ability and crosses make him a lethal winger for Manchester City.
1. Harvey Elliott (Liverpool)
Out of all the other players on this list, Harvey Elliot is the one who has played the most for his first team. Harvey Elliot shone and quickly became a great midfielder under Jurgen Klopp. After Klopp’s departure, just like Klopp entrusted him, Arne Slot has done the same.
Slot gave him a chance to shine in the pre-season tour. Harvey Elliot definitely took advantage of this opportunity. His best performance came against Arsenal in which he managed to provide two brilliant assists. Overall, his experience over the past few seasons and a commendable run in the 2024 pre-season can see Harvey Elliot breaking into the starting XI for good.
