Top five players who impressed in Euro 2024 group stage
Germany youngsters have impressed the most.
With the group stage phase of Euro 2024 drawing to an end with the final round of matchups in play, the tournament in Germany this summer has already proven to be a special watch for worldwide football fans due to its high-octane action, underdog stories, and unbelievable moments.
As the knockout rounds come knocking at the door, let’s look at the top five players who have impressed in the Euro 2024 group stage:
Nico Williams (Spain)
The 21-year-old winger came into this tournament with a lot of promise after an amazing club campaign with Athletic Bilbao, and he has now set the Euro 2024 stage on fire with his lightning performances for Spain.
Placed in a potential group of death alongside Italy and Croatia in Group B, Spain has been one of the best teams in this year’s competition through the performances of talented players like Nico Williams.
He started both of Spain’s crucial wins against Croatia and Italy on the left flank, helping La Roja emerge victorious in dominating fashion and sending them to the top of the table.

Despite not registering a single goal contribution yet, Nico Williams has passed the eye test with flying colors. He has proven to be a living nightmare for opposition defenders with his rapid pace, exquisite ball control, and elite in-game awareness. All of these traits were in full flow against Italy, where he put in a stellar display and was awarded the UEFA Player of the Match.
Yann Sommer (Switzerland)
In a tournament where talented upcoming stars have grabbed the majority of the headlines for their performances, Switzerland’s veteran shot-stopper Yann Sommer has been quietly doing his business with his world-class displays in the group stage phase.
Switzerland managed to finish the group stage unbeaten, placing second in Group A behind hosts Germany with two wins and a draw. A large part of this success has been due to their defensive setup led by Sommer in goal, who has made some incredible saves and conceded a mere three goals to help the Swiss qualify for the knockout rounds, making them a genuine dark horse in Euro 2024.
Lamine Yamal (Spain)
Barcelona gem Lamine Yamal became the youngest player ever to feature in the Euros when he made his competition debut against Croatia in La Roja’s opening game of Euro 2024.
In that match, the 16-year-old winger marked a ceremony of record-breaking events, as he also became the youngest player ever to provide an assist in the competition, setting up Dani Carvajal’s goal that sealed Spain’s dominant 3-0 win against Croatia.
Yamal continued his amazing form against a top opponent in Italy, where Spain completely dominated the Gli Azzurri to continue their winning run and qualify for the knockout rounds.
Lamine Yamal is already a key player in coach Luis de la Fuente’s Spain setup, and his performances will be instrumental in La Roja’s success this summer.
Florian Wirtz (Germany)
Host Germany entered this tournament with more questions than answers owing to their underwhelming international run in recent years.
These negative notions were completely brushed aside in Germany’s tournament opener against Scotland when Die Mannschaft’s talented attacking unit, led by Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, absolutely ran the show in a thumping 5-1 win.
Wirtz carried his stellar club form into this competition, as he scored the first goal of Euro 2024 with a solid finish. Julian Nagelsmann used Wirtz’s skillset on the left flank, where he has proven to be a constant threat with his strong passing range and phenomenal footballing brain. His world-class performances guided Germany to the top of Group A with an unbeaten group stage run of two wins and a draw.
Jamal Musiala (Germany)
Bayern Munich sensation Jamal Musiala has undoubtedly been Germany’s star player in their home Euros campaign. He has been one of the standout players in this tournament through his unbelievable performances on the pitch.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder is the top goal scorer of Euro 2024 so far with two goals, scoring in both of Germany’s Group A wins against Scotland and Hungary.
Along with the goals, Musiala displayed Man of the Match performances in both crucial games, as he was instrumental in Die Mannschaft’s ruthless attacking display in front of goal.
Heading into the knockout rounds, Jamal Musiala’s hot form could prove to be the difference maker in tight games, as the German wonder kid’s world-class dribbling skills, amazing passing range, and clinical finishing could well and truly propel Germany to Euro 2024 glory in front of their own fans.
